EPM Automate is Oracle's command-line utility for scripting administrative and maintenance tasks across Oracle Fusion Cloud EPM environments: Planning (including what used to be sold separately as PBCS and EPBCS), Profitability and Cost Management, Financial Consolidation and Close (FCCS), Account Reconciliation (ARCS), and the rest of the Cloud EPM family.
Paired with a script and a scheduler, EPM Automate turns the tedious, repetitive, error-prone parts of EPM administration (the stuff that has to happen every night or every month whether or not anyone's available to do it by hand) into something that just runs. That reduces cost, keeps data current without manual intervention, and frees up your administrators to spend their time on the work that actually requires judgment.
What EPM Automate Can Do
The range of tasks EPM Automate can script has grown considerably over the years. Broadly, it covers:
- File management: uploading, downloading, listing, and deleting files, including transfers to and from Oracle Object Storage.
- Data and metadata movement: importing and exporting data, metadata, dimensions, and Data Integration mappings (the current name for what used to be called Data Management mappings).
- Business rules and calculations: running business rules, calculation scripts, data load rules, and Data Integration pipelines on demand or on a schedule.
- Backup and recovery: creating, exporting, importing, and restoring application snapshots and environment backups.
- Cube and database maintenance: refreshing, compacting, and restructuring cubes, including ASO cube optimization.
- Environment management: resetting or restarting a cloud environment, cloning environments, and setting daily maintenance windows.
- Security and access administration: adding and removing users, assigning and unassigning roles, and exporting or importing application security configurations.
- Audit and compliance reporting: generating login, role-assignment, and activity reports for governance purposes.
That last two categories are a meaningful expansion from EPM Automate's early days as primarily a data-and-file tool: today it's just as capable of handling user provisioning and audit reporting as it is data loads, which matters if you're trying to centralize EPM administration into a single scriptable toolchain rather than juggling the UI for some tasks and scripts for others.
It's also worth knowing that EPM Automate commands can now be called from server-side Groovy business rules, so you can trigger automation directly from within an application's own rule logic without requiring a locally installed client, useful for triggering downstream tasks (like a Data Integration pipeline or a snapshot) as part of a rule a business user already runs.
Time and Resource Savings
EPM Automate saves time and reduces the labor cost of day-to-day maintenance, and any task it can run can be scheduled to match the actual cadence the business needs (weekly, nightly, or several times a day) rather than however often someone remembers to do it manually.
